Optimism Airdrop Details
Latest Update: On August 19, 2026, Optimism governance approved moving the remaining 546.9 million OP out of the User Airdrop allocation and into a new Strategic Ecosystem Fund controlled by the Optimism Foundation.
There is no active Optimism airdrop and none is planned. Across five rounds between 2022 and 2024, the Collective handed out 269.1 million OP. The 546.9 million OP that had been set aside for future rounds, roughly 12.7% of total supply and about $50 million at the time of the vote, will now go toward partnership deals, liquidity incentives on OP Mainnet, and contracts that bring institutions onto the OP Stack.
The Foundation’s reasoning was that broad user airdrops fit an earlier phase built around mass user acquisition and do not match its current institutional strategy. It did leave the door open, saying it would revisit the position if new airdrop designs address the retention problems its own research found. Tokens already claimed from Airdrops 1 through 5 are untouched and will not be clawed back.
The vote was close and contested. It finished at 17,973,915 OP in favor against 10,930,696 opposed, or about 62%. Test in Prod, a core development team that describes itself as fully funded by the Collective, cast 8.486 million OP in support with under 17 minutes left, taking approval from 45.77% to 61.84%. Without that vote the proposal would have failed at 46.47% and the tokens would have stayed with users. L2BEAT and delegate polynya both voted against, arguing the fund’s mandate was too open-ended for an allocation of that size.
Optimism’s Five Airdrops
Airdrop 1 landed in May 2022 and went to roughly 250,000 addresses based on early bridge use, DAO voting, and gas spent on Ethereum. Later rounds narrowed sharply: Airdrop 5, snapshotted on September 15, 2024, sent 10 million OP to just over 54,000 wallets that had been active on OP Mainnet and delegated their voting power.
The SuperStacks campaign, which ran until June 30, 2025 and awarded XP for using interoperable assets like USDT0 across OP Chains, has also concluded. Claiming for that campaign is closed.
What This Means if You Farm OP Stack Chains
Activity on OP Mainnet no longer builds toward an OP allocation. There is no points program, no snapshot, and no reserved supply behind it. Wallets that were farming Optimism itself in the hope of a sixth drop should treat that thesis as dead until the Foundation says otherwise.
Individual Superchain chains are a different story, since they run their own tokenomics. Ink has confirmed an INK airdrop, while Base and Soneium remain among the more watched unconfirmed L2 farms. Our 2026 airdrop tier list covers where those stand, the Base ecosystem page tracks tokenless projects building there, and the confirmed airdrops list covers programs that already have an announced token and a claim window.
Important Terms
Superchain: The network of Layer 2 chains built on the OP Stack that share security assumptions and can pass messages between each other.
Strategic Ecosystem Fund: The new OP allocation category created by the August 2026 vote, spent by the Foundation on partnerships and incentives rather than distributed to users.
Voting power snapshot: The block at which delegate balances are recorded. For this proposal it was taken on August 13, 2026, a week before voting closed, so OP acquired afterward could not affect the outcome.

Conclusion
Optimism ran one of the more influential airdrop programs in crypto, and it is over. Five rounds, 269.1 million OP, and an August 2026 vote that redirected everything left to a Foundation-run fund. Anyone who kept a wallet warm on OP Mainnet waiting on a sixth drop finally has an answer.
The Superchain is still worth watching, just at the chain level. Ink has a confirmed token, Base has never committed to one, and both run on their own schedule rather than the Collective’s.
What is Optimism?
Optimism is a Layer 2 scaling solution built on Ethereum that enhances transaction speed and reduces fees. By processing transactions off-chain while storing data on Ethereum’s mainnet, Optimism maintains security while improving network performance. The network is part of the larger Superchain ecosystem, which connects multiple Layer 2 solutions to expand Ethereum’s capabilities.
